Tuition that takes you higher
Step Up Learning offers English and maths tuition to children within easy reach of Cambridge, Soham, Burwell, Newmarket, Thetford, Bury St Edmunds and much of West Suffolk and East Cambridgeshire. We work with children from primary school, through secondary and up to taking GCSEs.
Our spring term starts on January 7th. We wish you a very successful 2019
About Us
Step Up Learning (formerly Kip McGrath) was founded by Kevin and Carol Higgins who have been running tuition centres in Suffolk and London for over 10 years. Our centres in Bury St. Edmunds and Newmarket have helped hundreds of children to pass exams, achieve higher grades and grow in confidence.

How we work
Our philosophy is quite simple: every child has the capacity to achieve greater things in life and through individual attention we can help them attain their goals.
All our tutoring is based around the individual student, there is no group teaching, and the teacher pupil ratio is never more than one to four. Your child can progress at a pace which suits them not the class they are in.
English Tuition
Our teachers are chosen for their commitment to their subject, their caring nature and the ability to empathise with the student.
Reading
We help develop your child’s reading skills at Key Stage 1 and 2 through phonics and computer based activities such as comprehension.
Spelling
We cover common letter patterns and auditory patterns as well as spelling rules, homophones, alphabet and dictionary skills.
Writing
If your child finds writing a challenge then we can help to develop creative writing skills.
English

Maths Tuition
Our maths tutors are chosen for their love of the subject as well as having an ability to empathise with the learner. There are many ways of approaching maths and we will endeavour to find the best method for your child.
Primary
Does your child fear maths?
Our programme gives your child the basics of number, ie he or she needs to be able to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide. Without these building blocks then more complex ideas will be difficult to understand.
Our initial assessment will give us the starting point for the programme and highlight any areas which your child needs to understand.
Secondary
At secondary level we will make sure the basics of number are understood and then we will work on developing the more complex topics of Algebra, Measurement and Handling Data.
GCSE preparation
If your son or daughter is in Year 10 or 11 then a session a week at our centre will help to get that important extra grade and ensure they can access the next level of their learning career.

Our Centres
We have two centres, one in Newmarket and the other in Bury St Edmunds. Our sessions are held after school and on Saturday mornings
We provide a safe learning environment where you can take your child for 80 minutes while you either wait at the centre or do some shopping. At the end of the session you can pick up your child receive feedback from our professional teachers and return home safe in the knowledge your child has made progress in their chosen subject.
Newmarket
Our centre in Newmarket is situated in a pleasant business park next door to Tesco. Free parking is available outside the door. We have 10 workstations and a wealth of written materials for all ages. Our centre is on the ground floor making it easily accessible.
Bury
Our centre in Bury St Edmunds is situated in St Benedict’s school. We are on the ground floor making it easily accessible.

How To Enrol and Prices
Enrolling is very simple and we will make it very easy for your child to start .
- Book an appointment by phone.
- We will offer a free assessment either outside tuition time or during a free initial session. The assessment will usually take 30 minutes, it is very informal and we will make your son or daughter feel very relaxed.
- Book a session which fits in with your schedule.
- Fees are £28 per 80-minute session or £26 per session if you book a full term. Sibling discount is available for 2 or more children. Fees are payable each half term or full term.
SATS
Thank you very much for helping me prepare for my SATS. I am extremely pleased to tell you that I got 5’s in everything. I wouldn’t have achieved this without the help I got at your centre. I’m now looking forward to going to secondary school, especially English. You really helped to boost my confidence.

Tutors Required
We are currently looking for tutors in Newmarket and Bury St. Edmuds who can join our team. Most of our tutors work one or two 80-minute sessions per week after school. We are looking for teachers who are passionate about working with children to help them reach their potential.
